  • Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial Scholarship

Posted by April Miller on 3/25/2025

On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in lower Manhattan, where it took the lives of 146 workers – most of them young women - in less than 20 minutes.

This tragic fire led to a variety of laws aimed at protecting workers. Among them were wage and hour laws, fire safety codes, industrial regulations – and the Workers’ Compensation Law.

Today, our firm continues the legacy of working to create positive developments out of the ashes of the Triangle Fire. Two of our attorneys (Robert Grey and Erin McCabe) are Directors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial, which provides college scholarships of $6,000 per academic year to the children of workers who were permanently disabled or died as the result of a work-related injury. If your workers’ compensation case falls into that category and your child is in or preparing to attend college, we would encourage you to apply at https://trianglememorial.org/scholarship/.

You can learn more about the Triangle Fire and the scholarship at www.trianglememorial.org.

  • Junior League of Kinston Florence Cordts Scholarship

Posted by April Miller on 2/21/2025

We are thrilled to announce that applications are now open to our graduating seniors for The Florence Cordts Scholarship, sponsored by The Junior League of Kingston since 1997! This scholarship was named for Florence Cordts, a Kingston, NY native and past League President. Florence joined the Junior League of Kingston at its outset in 1922 and served as President from 1931-1932. This scholarship is designed to support outstanding young women who are passionate about volunteerism.

We are looking to give out two awards of $1500 to two (2) graduating females from an Ulster County high school who demonstrate a strong commitment to volunteering and are enrolling in an accredited college, trade school, or an educational program that will result in a professional license or certification in the fall immediately following graduation from high school. Like namesake Florence Cordts, we are looking for scholarship recipients with a strong academic record, offer special contributions to our community through volunteer service, and demonstrate their ability to make a difference.

The application form is attached, and we encourage eligible students to apply. Please also visit our website kingston.jl.org or email jlkingstonny@gmail.com should you have any questions.
