New Paltz District Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics Named President of State Athletic Administrators Group  

The New Paltz Central School District is pleased to announce that Greg Warren, the District’s Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics, has been elected president of the New York State Athletic Administrators Association (NYSAAA). His one-year term started in March 2023. 

Warren worked his way through the ranks of NYSSSA, having served as the association’s vice president in 2021-2022. He has served on NYSAAA’s representative board for over 10 years. The association was formed in 1981 under its parent organization, the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). The New York affiliate is dedicated to promoting the professional growth of interscholastic athletic administrators throughout New York State. The association also aims to preserve the educational nature of interscholastic athletics and the place these programs have in the curricula of every school in New York State.

Warren, who has chaired the NYSAAA Educational Initiatives Committee for more than six years, developed a program for members to earn Continuing Teachers Leaders Education credit hours, which are required by the New York State Education Department. Warren also co-chairs the Aspiring Athletic Director program for people who are interested in pursuing a career in athletic administration.

Warren says that his goals for the 2023-2024 year include planning a robust annual conference and to continue moving the NYSAAA's strategic plan goals forward. The theme for the conference, he said, will be “Building a Foundation for the Future.” 

Warren, who has been a certified leadership training course (LTC) instructor for the 15 years that he has been involved with NYSAAA, is certified to teach 31 courses. 

Warren has received a number of honors during his career as an athletic administrator. He won the 2020 Chapter 9 Athletic Administrator of the Year award, NYSAAA’s Apple Appreciation award in 2019, and the Dr. John Foley Professional Development Award in 2018. In addition, he was recently nominated for the Bruce D. Whitehead Distinguished Service award of the NIAAA for 2022-2023. 

Warren looks forward to building on the work he has done for NYSAAA. “I am proud to be the president of the NYSAAA and to work with so many positive people whose goal is to promote interscholastic athletic administration,” he said.  

Dr. James Wright, associate executive director of NYSAAA, said that Warren has been a valued colleague and friend over the past 20 years. “Greg has a strong desire to make others better at what they do, as evidenced by his taking our Aspiring Athletic Director program to new levels as the chair and through his leadership as a past president of the New York State Council of Administrators,” he said.  

Wright also lauds Warren for his institutional memory and knowledge, which makes him a valuable resource when historical information is needed. “I am continually amazed at what he knows about athletics in New York State and that, too, is a tremendous asset to our association,” said Wright. “Now that he has risen to the presidency of the NYSAAA, more [members] will get to know how much he cares and that he has this quiet sense of humor that takes the edge off when we all need it. Greg’s school and Section IX should be proud to have him represent them as he leads the 750-plus members on their personal paths to success.”
